Nestled in the western part of Massachusetts, Southwick is a quintessential New England town that seamlessly blends historic charm with the beauty of the great outdoors. With its picturesque landscapes, welcoming community, and rich history, Southwick has much to offer residents and visitors alike.
A Glimpse into Southwick's History
Southwick's history dates back to the 18th century when it was first settled in 1770. Originally part of Westfield, Southwick was officially incorporated as a separate town in 1770. The town's name pays homage to Colonel Benjamin Southwick, who played a significant role in its early development.
Natural Beauty at Its Best
One of Southwick's most remarkable features is its stunning natural landscapes. The town is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. If you love spending time in the great outdoors, you'll find Southwick to be a paradise for:
1. Congamond Lakes: Southwick boasts not one but three beautiful lakes: North Pond, Middle Pond, and South Pond, collectively known as Congamond Lakes. These pristine bodies of water offer boating, swimming, fishing, and picnicking opportunities. On a warm summer day, it's the perfect place to cool off and unwind.
2. The Rail Trail: The Columbia Greenway Rail Trail, a former railroad track, has been transformed into a scenic trail for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. It winds through Southwick's charming countryside, providing a peaceful escape for nature lovers.
3. Local Farms: Southwick is home to several family-owned farms where you can pick your own fruits and vegetables, purchase fresh produce, and enjoy seasonal activities like pumpkin picking and corn mazes.
4. The Sofinowski Preserve: Julius J. Sofinowski and Sylvia C. Sofinowski used to keep sheep on this land. In June of 2002 the property was purchased by the Town of Southwick using a Self Help Grant from the Commonwealth. The property has a series of marked trails, all of which are relatively easy to traverse, with some areas that are rocky and some areas with a slight gain in elevation.
5. The New England Trail: A 235-mile long distance hiking trail from Long Island Sound in Connecticut to the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border. An extension of Connecticut’s blue-blazed Metacomet Trail, the Metacomet-Monadnock (MM) Trail starts at the MA/CT State line at Rising Corners in Southwick, MA. Click here for more info.
